| A joyful heart is good medicine |
|
An average child laughs 300 to 400 times a day, adults only about 10-15 times. Also the Dutch people should laugh more, because laughter is for pleasure and health. What happens to your body when you laugh? And why is laughter really healthy?
The body and laughter
Smile puts many muscles in motion: no less than 15 facial muscles for example. Therefore it is indeed easier to laugh than to frown, for which one uses about 40 muscles! Also the abdominal muscles strech the diaphragm softly and massage the body. In the other muscles the tension during laughing is low. This gives you a relaxed feeling. If you laugh you get a deeper breath and your blood pressure and heart rate are aligned. Your blood flows faster and thus transports more nutrients and oxygen to your brain. During laughter endorphins come free in the brain. These hormones give a pleasant feeling, have painkilling effects and reduce excess stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol. A laughter session of 20 minutes brings vitality and well-being as much as a step or jogging session. And without sweating!
Laugh your body healthy Laughing strengthens the immune system. And this immune system makes you better resistance against viruses and bacteria. Researchers saw an increase of protective antibodies in the blood after a laughter therapy. Smile promotes blood circulation and lowers blood pressure. After a laughter session of 10 minutes researchers saw a marked decrease in blood pressure of the person who laughed. These physical effects can have a healing influence. Smiling your spirit healthy will reduces stress, depression, anxiety and insomnia. The relaxation in the muscles and the release of endorphins provide a pleasant feeling. Through the endorphins, laughing can also work as a painkiller.
So come on, laugh yourself into a healthy social life.
